NDP Finance critic Trent Wotherspoon said today’s release of the Third Quarter Financial Report is further confirmation of the extent of the Wall Government’s financial mismanagement. He highlighted the government’s admission today that in the 2008-09 provincial budget, it took massive advance payments from potash corporations that it now has to repay this year.

“There are not ‘two stories’ in our province – potash and everything else – as Brad Wall is so fond of saying,” Wotherspoon said. “There is one story being told very clearly today: that is the Wall Government’s reckless and irresponsible management of the province’s finances.”

Wotherspoon said the Wall Government has been misleading the people of Saskatchewan and has hid the advance potash payments until now. He noted that this huge advance was taken by the government during a year of unprecedented revenue.

“The incompetence we have always known existed is actually larger than we thought,” Wotherspoon said. “Only when Wall is being forced to write cheques back to the potash companies did the people of Saskatchewan learn about this unprecedented move and the extent of his government’s stupidity and greed.”

Wotherspoon noted that while the potash problems are at the core of the Wall government’s incompetence, other details contained in today’s report reveal troubling signs. He noted that it designated no specific amount in last spring’s budget to fight H1N1 but admits in its latest update that it has had to add tens of millions of dollars to this year’s budget to cover these costs. In addition, social assistance payments have increased indicating that despite the government’s rhetoric of job opportunities in Saskatchewan and our relative affordability, many families are finding it hard to make ends meet.

“The incompetence of this government continues to hurt the people of Saskatchewan and they are concerned that the Wall Government has learned little from its costly mistakes. It has stripped more than a billion dollars from our Crown Corporations and Rainy Day Fund to pretend that it has balanced the books,” Wotherspoon said. “The Wall Government also refuses to make its budget process more open and accountable to the people of our province. With the next provincial budget only weeks away, we need a clear signal from this government that it has a plan to get out of deficit and a detailed plan to reign in its out-of-control spending.”
