Opposition proposes amendment to inadequate government motion

18 November 2009

NDP House Leader Kevin Yates said today that the Opposition will vote in favour of climate change legislation brought forward during the fall sitting of the Legislature if it contains the reduction target of 32% by 2020 that the Sask Party campaigned on during the last election.

“We are putting forward a constructive amendment to the current government motion by calling on the government to re-introduce its climate change bill and to include the reduction targets contained in its election platform,” Yates said.

Yates said if the Wall government re-introduced its Bill with the original Sask Party targets - the targets it campaigned on - the Opposition would be willing to pass the Bill by December 3 allowing the Environment Minister to travel to the upcoming climate change conference in Copenhagen with a real plan in hand.

The amendment reads as follows:

“That the Government Bill 95 An Act respecting the Management and Reduction of Greenhouse Gases and Adaptation to Climate Change from the previous legislative session be reintroduced, and;

That the targets that the government campaigned on in the election, from the platform document Securing the Future: New Ideas for Saskatchewan, that is a 32% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from current levels by 2020 and an 80% reduction from current levels by 2050 be added as legislated targets into the legislation, and;

That this legislation shall be passed by December 3, 2009, giving the Minister clear authority and an actual plan to present at Copenhagen.”
